These credit card offers usually promote a low fixed rate that applies to the transferred balance until it is paid off. So far, so good. Balance transfer promotions can be an excellent method for getting some low-interest (or interest-free) time between purchases and payment due dates. Additionally, transferring balances can be an astute option for those looking to consolidate their credit card debt at a lower interest rate.
But, as with anything that seems to good to be true, there may be provisions in the fine print of which you should be aware before making purchases with just any new credit card. Ignorance of these provisions could turn out to be expensive.
First, most credit cards only grant a "grace period" on purchases if you have completely paid off your previous balance. Since you are using this new card as a loan, that is not about to happen anytime soon. Therefore, interest charges will begin to accrue on each purchase from they day you buy them.
Second, these new purchases will often be subject to a higher interest rate and will be the last in line to get paid off. The credit card's regular higher APR will apply to these purchases. And, 100% of every payment you make on the new credit card will first go toward your finance charge, then toward the balance with the lowest interest rate. So the most recent items or services you paid for on credit will sit there, building up interest at the highest rate, and you can't stop it without paying off the balance transfer in full.
